Don't hate me. But I would really like to try to talk you into making your own hamburger buns. They are really easy. Store bought buns taste like cardboard and can you even imagine what they put in them to keep them from getting stale...yuck!!!
Here is the recipe:
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/4 teaspoons instant rise yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
1 1/4 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons softened butter
Pour the water into the bowl of your mixer. Add the yeast, salt, sugar and butter. Gradually mix in the flour and knead until you have a smooth dough. Put it in a buttered bowl and cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise until doubled in bulk.
Doubled in bulk! If you spray the top of the dough with a bit of cooking spray before covering it, the dough will not stick to the plastic.
This dough is so easy to work with. I made mini buns because I am making sliders for the 4th. You can make regular sized hamburger buns or make them oval for hot dogs. Once formed and placed on cookie sheets set them aside to rise for a bit. Bake in a 425 degree oven for about 15 minutes or until golden. The time depends on the size of the roll and how fast your oven cooks. You can brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds if you like. I sometimes caramelize onions and place them on top.
I doubled this recipe and it made exactly 100 rolls.
I place mine in ziplock bags and freeze them. I always have some of these in the freezer and I use them for sandwiches, hamburgers and also to make breakfast sandwiches for my kids. I can not emphasize how much better these are than store bought.
