Spargel (asparagus)

Spargel is the German word for asparagus. When asparagus is in season in Germany, restaurants add pages of Spargel dishes to their menus. This is one of my favorite ones.

I always shave off the thick outer skin on the lower part of my asparagus before cooking.

The base of this dish is ham. Slice some ham very thinly and pan fry it.

Grate some cheese. I highly suggest that you use Gouda. I did not have any and I used Jarlsburg and it just was not the same. Use Gouda. Trust me!

Place a layer of the cooked ham on a platter.

Top it with the grated Gouda.

Melt some butter in a frying pan and fry the asparagus over medium high heat until it starts to turn brown but is still crisp.

Place the platter under the broiler until melted.

Top it with the browned asparagus.

Top each serving with a fried egg. This is wonderful for any meal. We often eat it for dinner.

This is one of my daughter's favorite meals. Today is her birthday and even though she is not home to enjoy it, I made it for her anyway!

The hubby would love that. I'm not much of an asparagus eater.

He's going to plant it this year so we should have it in a few years.
Happy Birthday blog-tech's sister.

This dish looks wonderful, I love asparagus. I will have to cook my eggs a little more. I don't do sunny-side-up.
This is a wonderful combination! Simple. I think I can remember this without writing it down!

Thank you.

Have a wonderful day!

Mmmm...I love ham, *love* gouda and I adore asparagus. Spargel...big thing every spring in Germany. Especially weißer Spargel (white asparagus), which I truly don't at all understand the obsession with. :-)
How kind of you to eat your daughter's favorite meal on her special day! lol

Hi dear Jaz,

Happy birthday and spargel joy to you. This looks very do-able. Thanks for the recipe and directions.

I was served fresh asparagus with new violets last week in Kentucky. Featured a pic on new posting.

Love 'em.

Oh that is soooo yummy looking. I really need to quit checking your blog when I am hungry. Now my lunch does not look as good as it did this morning :)

Thanks again for sharing.

I will definately try to make this! It sounds great! I say try, because I usually eat the asparagus raw, before I get it to the supper table.

It is SO close to fresh asparagus season here, and every time I go to the grocer's, I'm so tempted to buy some that has been brought in from elsewhere, but I'm trying to stay strong. .it just doesn't compare with the local crop.

And I'm always looking for new ways to enjoy it, so his recipe is going into my book! Thank you!
