Lammas or Lugnasadh

Tonight into tomorrow is Lammas, which is the first pagan festival of the Fall. You can read about it here if you are interested in knowing more. http://www.cyberwitch.com/Wychwood/Temple/lammas.htm They have a great post explaining the day.

This is when the early/first wheat is harvested, so it is a time for baking bread. This is a favorite recipe for Lammas Bread. Place 3/4 cup of water in the bowl of your mixer. Add 1 tablespoon of yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Sorry for the blur but I am severely suffering from lack of sleep due to puppy watching! Add 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk, 2 tablespoons of melted butter and 3 tablespoons of honey.

Add 3 cups of flour and mix. Then add 1 teaspoon of salt. Add another 3-4 cups of flour and knead until you have a nice smooth ball of dough.

Place it in a greased bowl, cover with plastic and let it rise for about 1 1/2 hours or until doubled.

Here it is after the first rise.

Split it in two and place each half in a greased loaf pan. Brush the tops with an egg whisked with a bit of water. Place them to rise again for about 40 minutes. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 45-50 minutes. The internal temperature should be about 175 degrees.

I have made many different sandwich breads and i think this is the best by far.

Cool them on a rack. Homemade bread....a thing of beauty! Tomorrow I will show you what I made with it.

Poor Teddy is still having trouble drinking water while wearing the collar. She has such a thick short neck that it is tough for her to bend it, with the collar on, to get to the water even when I am holding the bowl. So, several times a day, I break up a cup of ice and we feed her ice chips.

She rather enjoys it.

A puppy snowcone, per se!

She will eat a whole coffee cup full of them.

Yum! Black tongue and black eyes. Hey Teddy, who punched you in the nose?

We can't let her off leash because she would run right to the hedges, stick her face in them and scratch her eyes. I know her tricks!

Who me? I am not a tricky puppy.

And about that bread mama....can you give a poor puppy a piece?

This bread does look wonderful. I may actually have time to make it this week. Teddy looks like she's doing really good. I think she deserves a sandwich on this yummy bread.

My neighbour ave me a giant zucchini from her garden. I was wondering, do you have any good zucchini bread recipes?

I haven't made fresh bread in years. This recipe looks so-oo good, I might try it. A puppy snow cone, how sweet is that. Hang in there Teddy. You'll be back to 100%real soon. Just have to deal with a little inconvenience, in the meantime.

Ahhh Lammas - love your bread! Downunder it is Imbolc - I know you much prefer winter but I am itching for spring.

Does teddy go to scratch as soon as you take off his cone for drinking/eating? Poor Teddy give him a pat for me and just a little bit of bread for a treat.
Love Leanne

Lammas! The first of the Fall season festivals. .officially the first day of Autumn! Yes, we can now celebrate!

I clicked on Teddy's photos to see her eyes. .I can't believe how much better they are looking, already! Not the dark around her eyes, but her actual eyes! You can see them! It would be wonderful to know what is going on inside that puppy mind of hers. I'm sure that she is noticing how much more she can see now. .she's going to need her own pair of shades to wear in bright sunlight now!

Your Hubby gets kuddos for thinking of the ice chips. .Teddy may never want go back to having to drink her water all on her own, ever again!

As for that bread. .yeah, Teddy. .I'd like a piece too! It looks SO good!

Poor sweet Teddy. That cone must be a pain. I think I can see some healing, though!

I will be making a caraway onion cornmeal bread tomorrow for Lughnasdh. And there will be lots of frozen blueberries...nice in this heat.

Hi October farm! I absolutely love the look of your bread! You make it look so effortless! I have never made bread because I am afraid that we would eat too much!
Hope doggie gets better soon!

Oh, sweet Teddy... is she getting anything to help her with the discomfort of the itching? That's a crazy-making feeling - to have an itch and not be able to scratch it. She sure looks good, though! And what a good mama you are, hand feeding her ice chips. Yes, I know all about hand feeding our beloved pups. lol
