Slow Cooker Apple Sauce

I am working with a group that picks up food from grocery stores when they can no longer sell it.  We got a load of apples a few days ago.  We passed out as many of them as we could but we still had some left over.  I brought them home and I have been making batches of apple sauce to give to the community. The apples were in very good shape, the stores just have rigid policies about expiration dates.  These came from Whole Foods.

It's really easy if you use a slow cooker.  My cooker holds about 18 apples. I peeled them and cubed them and put them in the cooker.  Add 1 cup of apple cider and about 3/4 cup of sugar.  The amount of sugar depends on the sweetness of your apples.  Add 1 tsp. of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

Set the cooker on low and cook for about 8 hours.

I had already filled 2 quarts before I remembered to take this photo.  Mash the apples with a potato masher and taste the sauce.  If it needs more sugar, add some and stir it to dissolve.

One cooker of apples made 3-1/2 quarts of good homemade apple sauce.  I love being able to make something good out of something that would have been thrown away.

I've never thought of using the slow cooker to make apple sauce! So smart!

Here they can't sell apples for full price if it has a brown spot, no matter how tiny it is no one wants to buy it.
It's the same with all fruit but the store in the village where I work sell it for half price, then it's good enough to buy :-) :-) :-) Well I get the bananas just as ripe as I like them and very cheap so I don't complain :-)

Have a great day!

I would have never thought of using a slow cooker either. Applesauce is yummy. I do not put sugar in mine. It is wonderful to give those apples new life given they were destined for the dumpster.

I am rediscovering apple sauce, which is something we have for our Christmas supper to go with the turkey, but who also remind of autumn. The recipe my brother makes does not have cinnamon, as he hates cinnamon.

What a great way to use the extra apples!
That's great and so healthy too for whoever gets to eat it.
Exactly what I needed..thanks!! The slow cooker method will work good for me.
(I bragged about you today! My daughter is a high school counselor and I knew she would love your story. She did! Sending her the link!)

What a wonderful idea. My New Years resolution is to seriously cut food waste in my own kitchen. I'm ashamed at how much went in the bin last year. No more. Have a wonderful new year Joyce
Waste Not Want Not--glad you found a way! Applesauce-so delicious and so good for you
