Chana Masala

I am still making Indian food and this is an excellent and very popular recipe with my Indian eating friends.  I like to make these recipes using Indian butter.

 Made in India.

 The ingredients:
2 15 ounce cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed
2 garlic cloves minced
1 onion diced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
1 inch knob ginger, peeled and chopped
1 15 ounce can diced tomatoes
3 tbsp tomato paste
1/2 lemon
1 tbsp coriander
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp garam masala
1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp tumeric
2 tbsp butter
Saute the onions in the butter until they begin to brown.

Add the garlic, ginger and jalapeno and cook for a few minutes.  Add the spices and cook until aromatic.  Add the tomato paste.

Smash it down and let it cook until it starts to get crusty on the bottom.

It will become somewhat drier.

Stir in the tomatoes and scrape up anything stuck on the bottom.  That's where all the flavor is.

Add the chick peas.  Stir and simmer for about 5 minutes.

Just before serving, squeeze in 1/2 a lemon.

Add a handful of diced fresh cilantro.

This looks good! But I doubt I can find butter from India here :-) People get enough upset when they find imported butter from Germany :-) Our farmers are a dying breed so they think we only should buy Swedish butter :-)

Have a great day!

Interesting recipe to read, but I am afraid I am not fond of Indian food.I am sure it must be great though.

I love Indian food - is there a markable difference in Indian butter? In my area, if the butter comes from south of Massachusetts, it's under suspicion...

Sadly, no Indian butter here. That dish sure looks scrumptious, though.

Is the Indian butter the same as ghee? This is clarified butter that you can heat to high temps. It's easy to make from regular butter. I know it is used in Indian cooking.
Looks very delicious.
