Two pairs of ivory knitting needles. These were probably carved on board a ship by a sailor for his wife. Scrimshaw and ivory carving were skills developed by sailors to fight boredom at sea. They spent endless hours carving whale bones into beautiful useful objects to give to their loves when they returned from months at sea.
