Broken Computer 4

At least we are getting more snow!!!   A lot of people have enquired about how I destroyed my computer and how the screen replacement cost 660.00.  It hurts to even type that.  I use an Apple laptop with a 17 inch screen.  I have had it for about 4 years and it has been a great computer.  I use it in the kitchen for most of the day and the screen is a dust and grease magnet.  I have always used a slightly damp paper towel with a drop of dawn dish detergent to wipe down the screen. Then I dry it with another dry paper towel.  I have done this several times a week for 4 years.  Four days ago when I did this, I guess the paper towel was a bit too damp.  Water leaked into the bottom of my screen and fried it.   The 17 inch is no longer made though the Apple store happened to have one screen replacement left in that size.  The cheapest new Apple laptop would cost over 2000.00.  Both kids just got new laptops for Christmas so the last thing I wanted to do was buy a third.  So, I bit the bullet and went for the screen replacement.  I am chalking this up to a very expensive lesson learned and water of any kind will never get close to my computer again.  We already have about 8 inches of snow this morning with another 6 inches on the way.  It is distracting me from my computer crisis!  Fingers crossed that I get my computer back today!  Meanwhile I am baking simit and making a big Turkish brunch.

I'm sure they must sell special wipes at the Apple store to clean the screen with. They come in little foil packets, just like hand wipes. Better safe than sorry, even if it's an additional expense to buy those wipes.
Thank-you-much, for explaining to us, just what you did, to fry your screen. I'm sure it did "hurt" to type that, but... ,-) Hope it saved a lot of us, from doing the same thing!!!!!!!!!!

I had the feeling that your computer is in your kitchen, a lot of the time. But never thought of how this could make it a magnet for grease and dust and general cooking-stuff-in-the-air. -sigh-

Hope you get it back "soonest"!

Hope you enjoy the snow (which is falling over/up here too!).

_Know_ you can always happily fill your time, with cooking!!!!!!! :-)
Oh gee, that is expensive! Hopefully you'll have it back soon!

I just hope you return soon, I miss knowing and seeing what's cooking in your kitchen. I need to send you a box of lens cleaning packets! Never use paper towels, they scratch. From snowy Maine, Julie.

Glad you are at least getting snow to compensate you for your screen destruction. Enjoy it...

Ouch! I love my nine-year old Apple laptop and hope it will work for me for awhile longer. I'm not ready for the expense to replace it with another
onc!

Glad you are having snow. We have clouds and wind, which makes the already cool temperature seem colder. No sign of snow anywhere nearby.

This is a horrible situation! Yikes. I'm sorry it happened but yes lesson learned, you better believe I'll be so careful from now on! The simit sounds delish, I've been meaning to try my hand at making them. I'll be over for brunch! It will certainly help you feel better about the screen and $$. Getting more snow here too, I'm off to go play in it!

well that explains part of it but why after all those times wiping it boom it breaks.I wipe my laptop all the time too ( mine is not an Apple though) its just a Toshiba but so far so good,I think I better look for the wipes though, better safe than sorry. My Toshiba cost half what your Apple did but I hate to have to buy another too soon.I'm so glad you got the snow, I know you love it, Ask me in April how much I love ours!!!

I'm not surprised about the price if it is an Apple. The best one can buy but more expensive. I too would have replaced the scxreen only if I had had an Apple :-)

I'm glad You finally get snow and lots of it :-)

Have a great day!
Christer.

I worked in technology for 13 years and serviced the school cafeteria computers. I could never seem to get through to them that they should NOT use wet cloths to "wash" the computers. I have always put a dab or two of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and use that to wipe down my computer screen.
Good luck!

So sorry to hear about your computer malfunction. Now I'm educated about how to clean a screen. Wipes only. Glad you are getting snow. It has started here too. Fun driving home from work tonight. LOL. How is your friend doing? I'm kind of afraid to ask. I have kept her in my prayers.
Lordy, but I wish I had your energy!!

Well, a flat screen monitor does require special attention when it comes to cleaning. For one, flat screens are more sensitive to touch and are much more prone to scratches and damage. Use a dry microfiber-type cloth and gently wipe the screen to avoid scratching the display.
