The Best Ham Recipe

I haven't posted this recipe for a while and since Christmas is a week away, I thought you might want to try this if you are having ham for dinner.  I just made 2 of these for the after school kids along with macaroni salad and potato rolls for their last dinner before holiday break tomorrow.
For the glaze, mix 1 large jar of orange marmalade with 1 large jar of dijon mustard and 1-1/2 cups of light brown sugar.

Buy a cheap ham.  This is the key to this recipe.  Cheap hams are pumped full of water and as it cooks, it releases the water which mixes with the glaze creating a delicious sauce.  Prepare the ham by scoring it all over at 1 inch intervals.  Place the plain ham in a 300 degree oven and bake it for 2 hours.

Remove the ham from the oven and push a clove into the middle of each of the triangles you have scored.

Pour the glaze over the ham and return it to the oven for another hour.  Then raise the heat to 350 degrees and cook for 30 more minutes.  This will thicken the juices.

That's all there is too it.

I always slice it ahead of time and pour the glaze all over to let it soak in. I paid 98 cents per pound for my hams and was able to get over 5 quarts of slices from each one.  My hams were each about 14 pounds.  I usually surprise the kids with what I am cooking but we told them ahead of time so they are sure not to miss this dinner.

This is a must try but for easter :-) Swedes are extremely conservative when it comes to the Yule ham but it is totally ok to do something else with the exact same kind of ham when easter arrives :-) and to be honest, my ham wasn't the cheap kind :-)

Have a great day!

I bet your kids are the only ones who can't wait for the holiday break to be over - so they can get back to those wonderful after-school meals!

It looks so wonderful! I know the kids are going to miss their great meals!
That is exactly how we have always done our hams.
I was so pleased when I read this. Grandma Turner used to do it that way..as did my Mom..:) and now so do I.
P.S. What a great meal for those children!! Question..do you have wings?? :)
Thank you! I want to make a ham for Christmas Eve and needed to know how to cook it. This looks perfect. I think I will bake some scalloped potatoes to go with it.
Oh those lucky kids! Enjoy!

Your glaze sounds terrific but I like the idea of slicing the ham and pouring the glaze over it. That must really bump up the flavor. I will try this. Thanks.
