Mustard and Cupcakes

I love whole grain mustard that is rather dry, not runny. I had a jar that was terrific but i could never find it again. So I decided to make my own. It is really quite simple. First I combined vinegar, brown sugar, garlic and spices and heated it until the sugar melted.

Then I mixed dry mustard with water and mustard seeds. I let the vinegar mixture cool and then mixed it into the mustard mix.

Then I put it in canning jars and processed it for 20 minutes in a water bath.

Mustard is supposed to "cure" for a month before you use it. I couldn't wait and we have used one whole jar already! It made 20 cups of mustard.

It cost about 20 dollars for all the ingredients. So my mustard cost about 1.00 for each jar compared to over 4.00 per jar at the store. And once again, it is sooooo much better than store bought.

The Salem Witch Daylilies continue to open.

I made mini cupcakes this morning.

And frosted them with fresh strawberry frosting.

I never thought of making your own mustard. I make my own vanilla extract because I hate store bought and it's sooooo expensive. A bottle of bourbon and a couple vanilla beans cut open and placed inside. Keep it in the fridge and shake it every time you use it to mix it up. After about 2-4 months, it becomes dark and yummy.

Thanks for the mustard idea. I'll have to give it a try, my husband and daughter are fans of whole grain mustard.

I am still enamored of those Salem Witch Daylilies. They are beautiful.

That's so great about the mustard. Now will your family be eating all that or will you give some as gifts to extended family and friends? They look like great little gifts. I've never tried doing any kind of canning before. Looks interesting!

I am always searching for new things to do by myself ! Never tought of making mustard either. Could I also run it in the blender to make the man happy ? lol

I suddenly realized that what you call a lily is what we call Hémérocalles in french ! I have two which I bought from a creator of new breads. I am looking forward to see them bloom for the first time.
