Amish Country

On a cold rainy day we headed off early to Amish Country in the middle of Ohio.

Click on any of the pics to enlarge them. The leaves have not fully changed yet but the views were wonderful.

You know you've arrived when you start seeing these signs.

You pass through one cute little town after another.

You can always spot an Amish barn because there will be no electrical or phone lines running to them.

Teddy kept a sharp eye out for 'big puppies' and made her strange strangling sort of cry each time she spotted some. What goes through that bean of hers?

I took most of these photos while I was driving so as who might imagine, I missed a great deal of things. Actually at least 1/2 of them were pics of the sky and the ground. This was an interesting scene. Crosses and American flags and I missed capturing the huge Star of David next to them.

The more rural you get the more of these you see. There were big blowup Halloween decorations all over the countryside.

This part of Ohio was settled by the Swiss and you can see it in the architecture of many of the homes and buildings.

I have no idea what to make of this. I mean, they drive buggies because they don't use cars so isn't this sort of against the religion?

Every store has a special parking area for the buggies.

You can find this area by following the poop. Poop happens!

This guy looked pretty bored.

This is a new complex which just recently opened.

I think the Amish family that owns it lives in this house.

Most of the women wear these caps.

Artistic straw.

Beautifully decorated.

The entire inside of the store was lined around the ceiling with these old fashioned vignettes.

Buggy traffic.

This is one of the absolutely cutest store I have visited in a long time.

They had things I have never seen before for your house and garden.

www.villagegiftbarn.com They ship and they have an online store.

There was so much to look at I could have spent hours in this place. But Teddy was waiting outside and she is impatient.

I love this chair. There was a matching love seat too. It is upholstered with burlap.

Look at these fairy gardens you can buy! If you want to make your own, they sell all the items in their garden shed.

They even have tiny little wheel barrows and gates. Tomorrow I will show you the rest of the trip.

Wonderful trip. I love that last store. I could spend hours in there also. The little fairy gardens are too cute. Hmmm I think I see one for me next year. I will start 'gathering' some items while thrifting.

I'm stunned that you returned home!... That Potting Shed certainly had some nooks and crannies you and Teddy could have hidden in to enjoy it all, after hours?! Such a beautiful day... thanks for sharing... looking forward to what you brought home with you... come visit when you can...

Wonderful countryside!
I really liked that shop and that swiss house!

Cars and the Amish people is a bit strange. All depends on which congregation they belong to. Some of them may have the right to take a driving license and hire cars, but not own one. Some may not be allowed to go with a car at all and some may have the right to go with a car but not to take a license.

I know that some of them now have troubles with cell phones. Most of them are allowed to have a regular phone, but in a shed in the garden, not in the house. But cell phones are a trouble since they then also can get access to the internet and most of them aren´t allowed to use the internet.

I think I would have fitted rather well in an Amish congregation if it wasn´t for the fact that I don´t allow anyone to tell me hoe to believe or think :-) and I would miss my computer :-)

Have a great day now!
Christer.

Don't sit in that burlap chair in just your skivies!! Ouch! :) I was suprised at such a large house...don't they live a little more modest than that or a little more down to earth...so to speak??

Looked like a really fun day!

Love reading your blog. I live in California and, through you I get to see parts of the country I'm not sure I'll have the chance to visit. Thank you!

I felt like I was riding around on a buggy back in time with you. Chow's don't like to wait for anyone and I can imagine Teddy's indignation that she wasn't allowed to go into that darling store with you while everyone admired her beauty. Going to visit that online store today!

Oh yes, I'm a big Amish fan...I like that they are pacifists and take care of each other in their community. I just wish they would shun the plastic shopping bags and bring their own fabric ones along when they get on board the van!

It is just awesome to see a culture that tries so hard not to use the electronics that we are so greatly addicted to. That picture of the buggies in the truck is priceless. When I visit my Grandmother in Cambridge, OH, we pass a couple of Amish towns. It is so humble.

Oh my stars! I want to go shopping with you! What a wonderful store! I also enjoyed each and every picture. Hugs and sparkles - WG
Can't seem to find your e-mail, and if you have facebook I could use that too.

I got my basket today and I am amazed. I started taking pictures when I opened the box, but when I go the plastic off and saw what was in side, I got too excited and forgot. I love it all, thank you so very much!
