Muffaletta Sandwiches and I've Given Myself an Award

I made muffaletta sandwiches today but more importantly, I've given myself a huge award!

I've placed myself in the #1 position in the Bread Bakers Hall of Shame.

Is this pathetic or what?

I am actually getting worse with this sourdough phenomenon!

What do you do with something that turns out like this? For a second or two I thought of feeding it to the birds. Then I quickly realized I would be accused of adding to the recent occurrence of thousands of birds dropping dead from the sky. So I thought of another way to use these duds.

I turned one on top of the other and inspiration struck. Before we were transferred back to the USA from Canada, I was about to take curling lessons. I always regretted never having learned to curl. But now with a little duct tape....

I have my very own curling stone.

Mine might actually be heavier than a regulation stone. If I had tried making sourdough bread sticks I would have a handle for my stone.

To make myself feel better I defrosted some sourdough rolls I made last week. I can't believe I was disappointed at how these turned out at the time. I have gone way downhill since then.

Muffalettas are so very good. First I make the olive salad. Kalamata and green olives are diced into small pieces. Then celery and onion is diced small as well and added to the olives. Add some capers and a tablespoon or so of red wine vinegar. Sprinkle some dried oregano and red chili flakes into the mix and stir it all together.

Spread the olive mixture over one side of the bun.

Top with salami and mortadella.

Add some mozzarella cheese.

Then some provolone.

Add some sliced chicken.

I add some arugula which is not typical but I like the flavor it adds. The sandwiches are pressed tightly together and wrapped in plastic wrap. The they are refrigerated until you're ready to eat them. Wrapping them tightly allows the juice from the olive mixture to soak into the bread.

In case any of you are on diets and hating me right about now, these are my sandwiches. Hummus, a bit of the olive mix, red peppers, cucumber, sprouts, arugula and lettuce. If I ate most of the stuff I make I would weigh 200 pounds! This is my typical sandwich.

The muffalettas go to the Blog Tech and his friends.

He also shares them with his band members.

And though I have hit sourdough bottom, my new dough and I are on the rise back to the top of the bread baking empire. The one I made this morning looks promising. Sometimes you just have to hit rock bottom and come back fighting.

Sorry, Jaz, you can't accept the award. I read the rules and it requires five, count them, five separate failures and you are just too top-drawer in the breadmaking business. I take it upon myself to rescind that award simply because you, yourself, ended the blog with an absolutely fantastic sandwich... However, I do suggest that you use this opportunity to practice curling with your own beautifully made stone! (Gosh! You could even teach Teddy to fetch!)

I'm so glad you showed YOUR sandwiches... wondered how you fared on your fantastic meals... I save most of mine for my gentleman caller or I couldn't do it, either! Have a great day!

Oh, Joyce, what an hilarious post today. Curling with sour dough, new olympic sport! Gosh, though, you are hard on yourself. You will overcome and dominate the sourdough breadmaking! Robin.
You are a riot! Don't give up we will find the sourdough secret. The muffaletta looks wonderful. I feel like I'm back in New Orleans. These are the perfect make-a-head sandwich for any time.

Too funny!! And I thought my husband..Dave...had thought of every way possible to use duct tape! He'll be jealous to know you've topped him on that one! Hang in there...there's a reason they call it "SOUR" dough!!
Thanks for the laugh today!! :)

What ever happened to those breads :-) :-) Well one can´t be successful all the time, but You have made a great curling stone :-) :-) :-)

Those sandwiches do look delicious even if I really dislike olives :-)

Have a great day and I hold my thumbs for better luck with the coming sourdough breads!

You crack me up.

Maybe it's good I don't like sourdough. I've spared myself the frustration.

I've made danish though and they are on broken teepee today.

You are SO funny!! And I'm sure that you are going to win this sourdough challenge very soon. The rolls that you used for your yummy sandwiches looks very good, and I'm sure that they taste wonderful! How would you improve on them?

(I love watching curling during the Olympics, and wished that there was more coverage of it during the off years. Too bad that you didn't learn how to play.)
Curling rock manufacturers the world over are quaking. Don't put them out of business! LOL, I'm sure things will improve soon!

LOL. So you have a .000001 error rate. If it makes you feel any better, my kitchen success rate is .000001.

Those sandwiches look awesome!

That is totally what I'm in the mood for. When work is over, I'm heading out to the store and get a few ingredients. Yummers!
Too funny. The curling stone comparison is hysterical. But on another note the sandwich looks amazing. My mouth actually started to drool.

Ohhhhhhhhhh you are so funny!!! One doesn't usually see cooking "messes" displayed in Blog Land. So we have to love you, for doing so! -gigggles-

And duck tape 'em into a curling stone! >,-)

Watch out for the snow, "Teddy"!

I love muffulettas! And don't feel bad about the bread; everything else you've tried is always brilliant! I've made that apple Mabon cake so often, it's become the biggest hit in my immediate and extended family in years. I even got my big, funny, manly friend cooking them for his pals, which is really saying something.

Too funny...

Have to add, I gasped at the part about not eating the sandwiches lest you become 200 lbs...

One person's horror is another person's GOAL. (But that's because I do eat what I cook, hehe.) ;)
