Old Fashioned Orange Frosted Cookies

When I was a little girl my best friends grandmother made these cookies and they were one of my favorite treats. I had a lot of oranges and could not decide what to do with them and then these came to mind.

Beat together the shortening and butter.

Old Fashioned Orange Frosted Cookies:

2/3 cup shortening
2/3 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 egg
1 cup fresh orange juice
4 T. grated orange rind
4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt

The Frosting:
4 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
4 T. butter, softened
2 T. grated orange rind
4 T. orange juice

Heat oven to 350 ºF. Mix shortening, butter, sugar and egg. Beat in orange juice and rind. Blend dry ingredients together. Beat into mixture. Use a tablespoon cookie scoop and drop on parchment lined cookie sheets. Bake 10 minutes. They should just begin to brown on the bottoms.

Frosting: Combine butter and sugar. Mix. Add orange rind and juice. Beat until smooth. Frost cookies when cool and let rest on cookie racks until the icing is set.

Add the sugar.

Grate in the rind.

Squeeze the oranges.

Add the fresh juice.

Add the salt.

Add the baking powder.

Add the baking soda.

Add 2 eggs.

Put the paddle attachment on your mixer and blend in the flour.

This is a rather wet dough.

Place the scoops on a parchment covered cookie sheet.

This is how they look when they come out of the oven. Let them cool on racks and then frost.

Kids love these cookies.

Let them sit on the racks until the frosting has set.

Then pack them away in a cookie tin. The flavor improves in 1-2 days.

Those look yummy...anything orangey tastes good this time of year. Hey, those would be a good Halloween or fall treat...you know...orange and all!! :)
Spectacular!! My Aunt Martha Jane made these when I was a little girl and I did not have a recipe! I am more than delighted to find this!

Thanks again, for all you share!

Who can wait a couple of days? These look SO good! I know that my hubby will love them because they are what he calls "fat" cookies, meaning that they aren't thin and crisp.

Thanks for another winner!
Cookies with Vitamin C -- they're like health food!

Ive eaten lots of cookies to be honest :-) But I don´t think I´ve ever eaten a cookie with oranges in them. It does sound delicious!

Frosting on cookies and cakes are really rare over here and I wonder why, it does make the cookie look even more delicious :-)

Have a great day now!

These look excellent. The citrus flavor would be a nice change of pace from regular sweetness.

hello,

Is there something else I can use instead of shortening? I can't seem to find it here at all and am hoping there is something else. Perhaps margarine and butter combined?

Thank you!
They look great! Mother in law's trees are loaded with oranges so would love to make up these!
I agree these could be classified as health food and you know we all need more Vitamin C in the winter.

I hope I find time to make them this week.

Another terrific recipe. Old fashioned recipes are sometimes the very best.
I love orange anything! I made my nana's organge cake and frosting for a Christmas dessert, it was fantastic! If I didn't know better I would have sworn she was in the kitchen with me! I'll have to try this one out! Thank you! It would go nicely with my recent post about maple muffins for a brunch . . . Thanks, and have a wonderful weekend!
