Homemade Pop Tarts

Better than store bought!

My kids have always loved pop tarts. I think they are awful. My daughter has been asking me to make them for a while now and I finally did. You should make some too.

You can make your own pie crust or you can use store bought. I made my own. Just roll the dough out and cut it into 3X4 inch rectangles.

Spread them with any kind of jam you like. You can also make sugar and cinnamon too.

Place another rectangle on top and crimp the edges using a fork. Then pierce the top crust several times to allow steam to escape.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes. They should just be turning brown on the edges.

While they are baking, make a glaze. Mix confectioners sugar with milk and 1 tsp. of almond extract.

Some of the filling might ooze out while baking.

Drizzle the glaze over the pop tarts.

Sprinkle them with colored sugar or sprinkles.

A bit messier than store bought but imminently better.

And so very easy.

You'll never buy store bought again!

I went to bed planning to make Pop Tarts today and now I have seen two posts on making Pop Tarts in my reader today! There must be a meme in the air! These look fabu!

Are you planning on toasting them further? My hubby wants frosting, but I don't think it would be a good idea if he wants to heat them in the toaster. Maybe if we had a toaster oven.

Blessing to you for this post. My son has been begging for pop tarts since he was given one back in pre-school. Thus far, I've held firm and now I can give him these and not have to worry about preservatives, HFC and other junk.

Guess what I will be making this weekend?

Kiss Teddy for me.
What a wonderful idea! I have visions of 20 different fillings. I think I'll start with homemade tomato preserves.

Ditto on thinking that they are horrible, but my kids still love them..must be a generation thing. .and I'm SO glad that none of them follow your blog, or I'd be getting phone calls as soon as they got home and on their computers.

But, sigh. .I think that this is so cool to make your own, I'll probably surprise them with some anyway! (I would even eat homemade ones!)

Oh My Stars! Just after I sent my last comment, my hubby walks into the room, sees your photo of your pop tart, and says, "OH!!! What is that, a homemade pop tart? THAT would be GOOD! Are you going to make some?"

So now I guess I am, and am going to have to make a double batch!

Blast! It's 8:30pm and I don't want to run to the store - but I'm craving a poptart now! I guess a bowl of cereal is going to have to do...
