Homemade Yogurt

I have been on such a yogurt kick lately. I really don't like store bought yogurt with artificial flavorings so I make my own. I like making a slightly sweet strawberry sauce and then serve the yogurt over the strawberries and topped with blackberries.

First you heat the milk to just below boiling. Then it has to sit until the temp comes down to 110-115 degrees.

I use a Donvier yogurt maker. You can find them on ebay.

Sorry for the blurry pic. Once the milk reaches the desired temp you mix a bit of it with 2 tablespoons and then mix that back into the rest of the milk.

You pour the milk combination equally into each of the containers.

You place the lids on them, set them in the yogurt maker and set the timer for ten hours.

The strawberry sauce is simple. I cut up 2 quarts of strawberries and put them in a heavy pot.

I sprinkle 2 tablespoons of sugar over them and stir them around. The pot is covered and they cook over medium heat until they start to boil. Then the heat is turned off and they sit until they cool.

The strawberries add lots of flavor and a bit of sweetness to the unflavored yogurt.

I found a couple new cheeses yesterday that I thought I would share with you. This is a cheese I don't know how I have ever lived without. It is a semi firm sheep's milk cheese called Istara. The woman that sold it to me said that once people sample it they rarely walk away without buying some. It is one of the best cheeses I have ever tasted.

Then I bought this cheese with a funny name....Lamb Chopper. It is a sheep's milk cheese with a buttery flavor and a complex finish. It is excellent.

I love Double Gloucester cheddar but had never tried it with chives before. If you like chives you will love this cheese.

And I bought my standard Norwegian Jarlsburg. These four cheeses would be great on a cheese board.

I just love that cheddar with chives, but seldom see it in the shops here. What did you mix in the milk? Homemade yoghurt sounds nice.

I don´t know how many times I´ve been thinking of making my own yoghourt, but I never have. Like You I really don´t like that artificial taste, but we have one called FjÀllyoghurt (that would be something like Alp yoghourt), it´s really fat but with real berries in it.

I´ve heard about Istara before, but never tried it.But Jarlsberg is a cheese I often have myself, it´s really delicious!

Have a great day now!

I will get back to yogurt making as soon as I have enough milk. With only milking Sarah I am only getting about a pint a day right now...
I'm on a yogurt kick too! Stoneyfield Organic Plain, and I add honey and fresh strawberries, mango, blackberries or cinnamon. Just one fruit at a time. Yum.

I may check into a little yogurt machine. Doesn't seem to difficult.

Ahh...the cheeses, I love most all cheese. These are new ones but sound delicious.

Thanks for sharing.

Have a good weekend.

I enjoy yogurt but lean towards the soy varieties in lieu of the dairy ones. I do savour good cheese though:bought a piece of Mull of Kintyre, extra mature, Scottish cheddar last week.
You are singing my song. This blog made me reallllly hungry!
Wow! And I think I'M being exotic when I buy a chunk of asiago cheese!

Seriously. Is there anything you don't know how to make? Perhaps you should look into your own cookbook.

Had a yogurt maker back in the day and gave it to my daughter, who decided she liked to make larger batches in a bowl. Don't know why, but have gotten out of the habit. (Psst. You mix it with 2 Tbspn of what???) I love Jarlsberg but the other cheeses are new to me. Will have to run them down. Love new cheeses... Come visit when you can...

This is breaking my heart, because I've developed an allergy to dairy. Not only upsets my stomach, but nasal passages immediately close down. .not a good thing at all.

Those cheese look SO yummy! And hubs is under doctors orders to eat at least one container of yogurt a day (the added calcium so that his chemo drugs don't weaken his bones), and I just bought a yogurt maker because I think that homemade would taste better than the commercial brands. .so major thanks for the strawberry sauce recipe. I'm sure that he will love it!
