Piss and Moan

Okay, I might be a pisser but I am not much of a moaner but today I am both.  At the end of a long day yesterday, being locked in the house with Teddy while painting and carpentry was being done, the head carpenter announced that they had completed the back porch. Yay...a small step forward in a massive project.  And have I mentioned that we hired the best general contractor in our region to do this?  I looked through the door a couple times and looked up from the patio to gaze at the ready to be painted back porch with a sense of satisfaction that things were going well.  Then last evening, I finally went out on the porch for a closer look.  As I perused the job something caught my eye and I reached out and pulled on one of the spindles. If you notice, this spindle is right next to the post they replaced yesterday.

Then I pulled on another.

And two more.

Apparently someone had checked some spindles because I found this too.  Needless to say I am waiting for a phone call from the general contractor this morning.  And it goes without saying that if I had not found this, the painters would have painted right over them.  I have done many, many projects in my day and they all have some version of this story.  So, a word to the wise, look closely, look very closely when you have work done.  This is why people hate to get involved in projects like this. And on a side note, this will probably add another 3-4 weeks on a project that has already been estimated to last 3 months.  I'll be lucky if it is done before the first snow.

Maybe tomorrow I will let Teddy stay outside and supervise the workers.

Contractors try to keep everyone happy and end up making everyone angry. I've had some good ones and they are worth their weight in gold.

well one thing for sure they won't be neglectful when it comes time to send the bill!
That whole railing probably should have been replaced, if he's the best in the area I would hate to see the worst!
I have watched Garry check for rotting wood ( punky we call it ), he goes around with something pointy, soft wood is easy to find, looks like you''ll have t check it out yourself from now on,,
I hope they didn't charge you for replacing the whole thing,,
I would let Teddy deal with them,

Builders everywhere are a nightmare. Even if the builder himself is good, when he leaves important work to shall we say less skilled people, standards fall. It'll be worth it in the end to have it all done correctly.

Husband said if that is the best contractor in that part of the country - you are in a bind. Shoddy workmanship and no pride in their work.

A contracting crew that built a deck on a house behind us is supposed to be here tomorrow to rip off our unsafe old deck, the original to the house, and build a sturdy new one with safe steps. I am going to watch them like a hawk, and I am going to have my husband look at this blog post. That was PITIFUL.

Maybe you should let Teddy supervise. She'll keep them in line. Don't let them give you a lame excuse. Looks like they were hoping you would be a dumb woman and not bother to check and find shoddy workmanship.

You have got to be kidding...I would have had a tantrum......shoddy work!!!!!

I'm sad to read this but even sader that I'm not surprised. Give them hell now so they understand that there's no use in trying to fool You again!!

The risk of letting Teddy supervise the work is that she'll scare them to death :-) :-) :-)

Have a great day despite it all!

Christer.

This is so very frustrating. I feel your pain.
Ugh! I hate renovation! My life is a renovation, I live in a constant renovation! I think having Teddy as the supervisor is a grand idea, she can take a bite out of them if they don't do their job right!

So sorry for both you and Teddy. I hear so many horror stories about having work done, it is just a dirty shame!

WOW, that is so crappy (I had another word in mind but I'm being nice). Ugh, that's what gives contractors a bad name at times. We had a horrible plumbing job done at the farm a couple of years back. So frustrating. I still find things that I think "really? why did they do THAT?".

Hang in there!

We are painting a deck (wood deck and a concrete patio) and replacing gardens this summer -- during our Texas heat wave! Why now? Why us? Because we TRIED to find workers to help us -- and they wanted A) LOTS of money OR B) would NOT call us back .....

.... So Sorry about your shoddy/sloppy job by your workers! As mentioned above they were simply hoping that you would not check on them .... and simply pay the bill!

Jan (old crone -- and all of these thorny problems don't help!)
