A Stumpery

This is another project I've started which will take years to see results.  Gardening equals patience.  I have a lot of stumps and exposed roots throughout the Toy Woods.  The roots are a tripping hazard and there are too many stumps to dig out.  In Victorian times, people created 'stumperies' to deal with these problems.  I am attempting to do the same.

I am planting assorted ground covers in and around the roots.  If nothing else, it marks where the roots are so you know to be careful when walking near them.
 
The main idea is to decorate them.

I can't wait for these areas to fill in.

I had a huge Black Walnut tree cut to the ground. The stump was easy to avoid until it became covered with grass creeping over it. This was a hazard. So, I put huge rocks over the stump and had what I called a rock garden. It worked.

The rocks were about 18"x24"x10"--that is my idea of huge. Soon, I had a huge pile of rocks. Then, I used them to put plants in pots so people would not just try to walk on the rocks. The mower could weed eat. I did not have to tend plants in the ground that would get weeds.

Roots growing above the ground are treacherous. I always trip on them! This idea is a great one.

The last one needs the head of a turtle at one end of an exposed root!

Brilliant! Exposed tree stumps and roots are a real hazard and planting around them is a great solution. Thank you for sharing. Your plantings around roots looks lovely in the toy woods.
