Christmas Came Early This Year

I made an igloo cheese ball for my little friends.  One of them said he wants to take me to show and tell at his school.  Ha ha!

I have a little story to tell you today because Christmas came early to a bunch of us last night.  About 7 months ago, I decided to change my will.  I thought, why leave money to people that are living good lives and not wanting for much?  Instead, I thought, why not try to make a change and do something different.  So, I picked the poorest community in our area and designated them as the beneficiary of a hefty insurance policy.  Unusual?  Yes!  But it worked.  For the last 6 months, very dedicated people worked very hard to find matching funds from organizations and last night it all came together. We were able to make all of this work to a great advantage.  Last night, a vote was taken and a group of compassionate people unanimously voted YES!

Teddy's normal morning position in front of the stove, praying something drops to the floor.

As of today, students living in this small impoverished town will now be eligible to receive full scholarships to colleges or trade schools.  All they have to do is keep their grades up. There is no time period either, this goes on indefinitely.

These kids had no hope of finding funds for college before.  Many of them gave up and dropped out of school altogether.  Why work hard at getting good grades when there is no hope for attending college?  Now they have a chance.

Sometimes thinking outside the box is a very good thing.

Bless you for doing this!
Wow, what a terrific way to make a difference in people's lives! I'm just thinking of the mechanics of how that insurance policy must work. To be secure, the premiums must be fully pre-paid, I would imagine, and the beneficiary designation would have to be irrevocable.

OK, now that's pretty awesome. Thank you for doing this and thank you for putting the thought out there for others. 2nd Man and I have no children and no direct relatives. We've often thought of what we might leave things to when the day comes and you've given us something to think about. Thank you for all you do.

You touch so many people in so many ways.. You make me want to pay it forward everyday.
Dear Joyce, as a public school teacher I cannot tell you how much this warms my heart. As you know, there really is not a lot of money available for public school classrooms. I received no budget this year to purchase items for my classroom. Thankfully there are organizations that allow teachers to submit a request for classroom needs to get funded. I was very fortunate to have a project funded. You are an angel and one day those fortunate children will realize just how special an angel you are. Merry Christmas!

The wonderful smells of all those goodies baking and the cooking that goes on, must drive Teddy crazy. When I make toast or bagel in the morning for breakfast, Mele is there in a flash. Teddy must be in doggy heaven living with you. :)

You are so right about the assumptions people make. I have been lucky to live a comfortable if not rich life. I've never truly wanted. Then I moved here to Montana and the town were we live is poor. Poor like I never saw in New Jersey. Poor like people have to hunt to eat. If they don't get that deer they have no meat for the whole year.
People scoff at "the poor" as if it's their fault and their lazy. Yes, some are but these people here are some are the hardest working folk I have ever met. They don't want the life they have but they never had that opportunity you are now offering these kids. All it takes is that hope and a child's whole world can change.

Jazz I haven't been in blog land for so long & this is one of the first posts I came across this morning . I can't say enough of how what You are doing warmed me & is very real to me . I dropped out of college after 2 yrs attending when I was a single mum of 4 . I'd been receiving funding til that point & one of the major discouragements to me & why I dropped out was my funding stopped, social services . the gov changed & my program funding was cut . I was told by the new social worker assigned to me ( a white male ) that I would have to take out loans to finish my schooling . I had another 2 yrs to complete & the thought of struggling to support the kids & have major debt. to pay off after finishing school was not worth it to me .I could not see an end to being poor even once school finished .I felt I'd forever be in debt. & my kids would suffer .
it would've made all the difference knowing while in school the rent would be paid , food & childcare taken care of & no debt after finishing school .
in the end life went on & now my 3rd child is our first child in university . he is single so he felt he could take on loans & already has job in forestry here for summer months but I can't help but worry about his loan issue once he is out . he at least does not have a family to support yet . he may get some funding yet via the metis /aboriginal center but there are many in line to access funding .
so you can see I really mean it when I say your steps in creating means for people to access education really can mean a big change in choices people have &open options not there before .
Thanks so much for sharing & it is so good to see Teddy again & all your yummilisous goodies <3
