Pumpkin Rolls and Ham and Potato Chowder

We've had our first frost and since the days are nice and cool, I am making the after school kids heartier food.  I made trays of these rolls yesterday.  http://octoberfarm.blogspot.com/2014/10/honey-butter-pumpkin-rolls.html
And I made this ham and potato chowder for them too.  Here's the recipe:

ingredients
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon thyme, chopped
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 pounds potatoes, diced small
  • 8 ounces ham, diced
  • 1 cup corn
  • salt and pepper to taste
directions
  1. Heat the oil in a large sauce pan over medium-high heat, add the onions, carrots and celery and cook until tender, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Mix in the garlic, thyme and flour and cook until the flour is lightly browned, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Slowly stir in the broth, de-glazing the pan as you go, add the milk and potatoes, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 10-12 minutes.
  4. Add the ham and corn, cook until heated and season with salt and pepper.

I always enjoy seeing what you have created for the after school kids to eat. It looks delicious and I'm sure it was devoured.

Boy, that chowder sounds good. I think I have a ham steak in the freezer - it may be on the menu this weekend!

That chowder looks yummy, just the type of thing you'd crave this time of year!

Gawd, that soup sounds good. Think I'll give it a try over the winter when such hearty comfort food is needed!
