Moving Things Around

As my guest house basement project progresses, I find myself shopping in my own home for furniture rather than buying new things.  I've lived in my house for over 30 years and by doing this, I am looking at things differently than I have in a long time. The big question I keep asking myself is, what can I live without?  Building an unfitted kitchen means using my creativity to find storage solutions and that is why I added this piece.

This antique piece was in my art room for 25 years.  This was one of the largest pieces of furniture in my house.  Needless to say, when I moved it to the stonehouse, it left a gaping empty space in my room.

So, I started looking around to find a replacement.  That's when I thought about this Patina desk.  I actually designed this piece many years ago and it took a year to have it made.  It has been sitting in my bedroom ever since.  And, I rarely use it.

I love this desk and OMG it is very heavy.

Over the weekend, my husband, My Daughter and I moved it.

It had to come down a very long and winding staircase but we did it.

There was a lot of grunting and groaning but we finally got it in place. It was so heavy that we couldn't lift it so we had to slide it the whole way.

It looked rather small sitting against my very large wall.

So, I decided to let it shine by leaving the upper doors open.

There are insects hand-painted around the edges and the bench that goes with it is covered in a silk fabric with bees.

I added some art on either side and placed some chairs I already had next to it.  Now my desk, that no one ever saw, has a new home and will probably be used a lot more. If this thing ever gets moved again, I'm calling movers.

It looks great in its new location, with the symmetrical chairs and framed pictures on each side and the doors open! Quite stunning, actually!

I love the furniture in your place.
You have beautiful furniture and exquisite taste. Down stairs is always easier than up stairs. Tommy moved lots of my furniture downstairs by sliding pieces down two flights.

Beautiful! I remember watching a show once where they took everything from other rooms in someone's house and moved them around and it was amazing how things so completely changed. You made some great choices. Oh and you designed that piece? STUNNING!
