This is Worth Reading

“I'm a liberal, but that doesn't mean what a lot of you apparently think it does. Let's break it down, shall we? Because quite frankly, I'm getting a little tired of being told what I believe and what I stand for. Spoiler alert: not every liberal is the same, though the majority of liberals I know think along roughly these same lines:
1. I believe a country should take care of its weakest members. A country cannot call itself civilized when its children, disabled, sick, and elderly are neglected. PERIOD.
2. I believe healthcare is a right, not a privilege. Somehow that's interpreted as "I believe Obamacare is the end-all, be-all." This is not the case. I'm fully aware that the ACA has problems, that a national healthcare system would require everyone to chip in, and that it's impossible to create one that is devoid of flaws, but I have yet to hear an argument against it that makes "let people die because they can't afford healthcare" a better alternative. I believe healthcare should be far cheaper than it is, and that everyone should have access to it. And no, I'm not opposed to paying higher taxes in the name of making that happen.
3. I believe education should be affordable. It doesn't necessarily have to be free (though it works in other countries so I'm mystified as to why it can't work in the US), but at the end of the day, there is no excuse for students graduating college saddled with five- or six-figure debt.
4. I don't believe your money should be taken from you and given to people who don't want to work. I have literally never encountered anyone who believes this. Ever. I just have a massive moral problem with a society where a handful of people can possess the majority of the wealth while there are people literally starving to death, freezing to death, or dying because they can't afford to go to the doctor. Fair wages, lower housing costs, universal healthcare, affordable education, and the wealthy actually paying their share would go a long way toward alleviating this. Somehow believing that makes me a communist.
5. I don't throw around "I'm willing to pay higher taxes" lightly. If I'm suggesting something that involves paying more, well, it's because I'm fine with paying my share as long as it's actually going to something besides lining corporate pockets or bombing other countries while Americans die without healthcare.
6. I believe companies should be required to pay their employees a decent, livable wage. Somehow this is always interpreted as me wanting burger flippers to be able to afford a penthouse apartment and a Mercedes. What it actually means is that no one should have to work three full-time jobs just to keep their head above water. Restaurant servers should not have to rely on tips, multibillion-dollar companies should not have employees on food stamps, workers shouldn't have to work themselves into the ground just to barely make ends meet, and minimum wage should be enough for someone to work 40 hours and live.
7. I am not anti-Christian. I have no desire to stop Christians from being Christians, to close churches, to ban the Bible, to forbid prayer in school, etc. (BTW, prayer in school is NOT illegal; *compulsory* prayer in school is - and should be - illegal). All I ask is that Christians recognize *my* right to live according to *my* beliefs. When I get pissed off that a politician is trying to legislate Scripture into law, I'm not "offended by Christianity" -- I'm offended that you're trying to force me to live by your religion's rules. You know how you get really upset at the thought of Muslims imposing Sharia law on you? That's how I feel about Christians trying to impose biblical law on me. Be a Christian. Do your thing. Just don't force it on me or mine.
8. I don't believe LGBT people should have more rights than you. I just believe they should have the *same* rights as you.
9. I don't believe illegal immigrants should come to America and have the world at their feet, especially since THIS ISN'T WHAT THEY DO (spoiler: undocumented immigrants are ineligible for all those programs they're supposed to be abusing, and if they're "stealing" your job it's because your employer is hiring illegally). I believe there are far more humane ways to handle undocumented immigration than our current practices (i.e., detaining children, splitting up families, ending DACA, etc).
10. I don't believe the government should regulate everything, but since greed is such a driving force in our country, we NEED regulations to prevent cut corners, environmental destruction, tainted food/water, unsafe materials in consumable goods or medical equipment, etc. It's not that I want the government's hands in everything -- I just don't trust people trying to make money to ensure that their products/practices/etc. are actually SAFE. Is the government devoid of shadiness? Of course not. But with those regulations in place, consumers have recourse if they're harmed and companies are liable for medical bills, environmental cleanup, etc. Just kind of seems like common sense when the alternative to government regulation is letting companies bring their bottom line into the equation.
11. I believe our current administration is fascist. Not because I dislike them or because I can’t get over an election, but because I've spent too many years reading and learning about the Third Reich to miss the similarities. Not because any administration I dislike must be Nazis, but because things are actually mirroring authoritarian and fascist regimes of the past.
12. I believe the systemic racism and misogyny in our society is much worse than many people think, and desperately needs to be addressed. Which means those with privilege -- white, straight, male, economic, etc. -- need to start listening, even if you don't like what you're hearing, so we can start dismantling everything that's causing people to be marginalized.
13. I am not interested in coming after your blessed guns, nor is anyone serving in government. What I am interested in is the enforcement of present laws and enacting new, common sense gun regulations. Got another opinion? Put it on your page, not mine.
14. I believe in so-called political correctness. I prefer to think it’s social politeness. If I call you Chuck and you say you prefer to be called Charles I’ll call you Charles. It’s the polite thing to do. Not because everyone is a delicate snowflake, but because as Maya Angelou put it, when we know better, we do better. When someone tells you that a term or phrase is more accurate/less hurtful than the one you're using, you now know better. So why not do better? How does it hurt you to NOT hurt another person?
15. I believe in funding sustainable energy, including offering education to people currently working in coal or oil so they can change jobs. There are too many sustainable options available for us to continue with coal and oil. Sorry, billionaires. Maybe try investing in something else.
16. I believe that women should not be treated as a separate class of human. They should be paid the same as men who do the same work, should have the same rights as men and should be free from abuse. Why on earth shouldn’t they be?
I think that about covers it. Bottom line is that I'm a liberal because I think we should take care of each other. That doesn't mean you should work 80 hours a week so your lazy neighbor can get all your money. It just means I don't believe there is any scenario in which preventable suffering is an acceptable outcome as long as money is saved.”

Isn't this too long and well-written for any Trump supporter to read?

I would love to actually READ such a statement BY a TRUMPIST. You'll never see one though. To actually put down in cogent writing what THEY support, what they see what they are entitled to and what they see as America's future .... would be the very thing they KNOW should never see the light of day.
Leanna said…
This is well said and it most likely rings true with every liberal out there. We will never see what a trump supporter thinks because they have no rational thoughts about what they want. The extreme Republicans have broken away and now they are forming their fascist government. We might be able to vote trump out of office but he will never leave. He is settling in deep and we won't be able to force him out without a civil war. Mark my words.
bornfreev said…
I agree with you Leanna. If we should be so fortunate in November to vote Trump out - he won't go down without a fight and he will be around long after he is unseated. Since he has been in office he has seated 193 Federal Judges. Not to mention the 2 SCOTUS justices - they are both youngish and will likely be there long after I die. I pray that RBG can hang in there until we win back America!
According to Snopes, this essay was written by Lori Gallagher Witt. Still, it is a well-written and comprehensive expression.

Great article and enjoyable read.

Sounds like a lot of Canadians too including myself. And no, Canadians are not Communists or Socialists.

No government is perfect, but they can all make better effort to take care of people and make sure that companies are being more fair to their employees, customers, etc. Companies and the rich are because they have taken too much and have not taken their fair share of financial responsibility.

Only thing I would recommend is to re-format the page so it's easier to read. Add spaces between each paragraph to break it up a bit visually.

I went to high school before the sixties 'revolution'. We were taught that liberalism and conservatism were not laundry lists of issues.

Rather, to be liberal was to be in favor of change. While to be conservative was to be in favor of maintaining the status quo.

I've learned since then that the country does best when it has a healthy liberal vision that is tempered by conservative pragmatism.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us! So very well said. The sad thing is, there are so many that have dug their heels in, they won’t “listen” to anyone or anything else. I agree with you that we all shouldn’t be all thrown together under the heading of “Liberals,” as we all don’t necessarily have the same exact views or beliefs either. We all need to start listening to each other and try to agree to disagree. The parallels you mention are very scary and can not be ignored as well! I am close to your age, so have seen the changes through the years. There have been both Democrat and Republican Presidents that I have had much respect for. I am a teacher, and a parent, and I have always told my own kids and my students, If you lose the trust and respect of someone, you will lose it all!” You don’t want to ever let that happen. Now it is happening and it is sad that we have to say, “I have no respect for this President.” Thank you again! I appreciate your openness and candor!

"Just because you don’t support Trump doesn’t mean you have to bash his supporters."

Says "Anonymous", a Trump supporter who's got the nerve to claim that "Trump has done a lot more good with our country in the 4 years than our last President did in his 8 years", but only as long as we don't know his (or her) identity.

Yes, "Anonymous", we DO think Trump supporters deserve bashing. And what's more, we're happy to do it under our own names.

interesting and well written. It is how he stands and many of his points I agree with. the ACA is a piece of crap. the people with most need are who pay. on the surface, when started I was hopeful but the ACA has done more harm than good. The old system was more affordable and covered better but only people who had jobs that offered med ins could get it. No one has ever said it was great. People need to have a choice but they must accept the consequences they make, good or bad. That includes people who choose not to carry any med ins and develop CANCER before they qualify for medicare. A true pre-existing condition based on their choices throughout their life by choosing not to carry any plan even catastrophic. I can address each point but like any word used as a label it references/taints based on how the majority act.

I agree with everything Ron stated in his writing and blog. He sounds more progressive at times. And all of his views and beliefs that he stated line up with the views, ideas and beliefs of Bernie Sanders, an progressive, socialist Democratic running for the high office of President of United States. I wounder if Ron is supporting Bernie and may want to take a look at doing so. I am somewhat liberal myself, but i would consider myself more progressive like Bernie Sanders and consider myself one who supports the democratic system of politics and freedom but oppose our current capital free economic system that supports the greedy wealthy and does not help much of the poor. I am in line with, agree with and support Ron's views on all those topics he mentioned.

Thank you. This is exceptionally well written. I have been a Christian for 45 years, and I consider myself to be a moderate. I am in agreement with the views you stated, and it saddens me greatly to see the direction in which this country is headed. It also saddens me that so many support the current administration because the person who heads up our country claims to be a Christian. Our Bible tells us "by their fruits(meaning fruits of the Spirit)you will know them (Christians)," and "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." (Galatians 5:22) Enough said!

I agree with these ideals. No party or administration will ever be perfect. I resent labels that put me in a box. I'm offended when people on the far right think they are the only ones who care about our country. I'm a patriot! I proudly fly our flag! Our country can unite behind each of these beliefs. The current administration is focused on dividing us! Pay attention, America. The world is watching us, as we fray at the seams and resort to name calling and desert our values. I consider our country to be in trouble. Please Think about the world we want to live in. Not tomorrow or someday. How about today?

This is the exact representation of how I feel. And yes, feel is a personal term not intended to force my “feelings” on anyone else. You should be able to live in peace with your beliefs, guns, healthcare - and YES your taxes! I willingly pay my taxes knowing (hoping) that at least a portion of them go to someone less fortunate. I do not want to fight with you, lose friendships or be accused of untrue things just because we are different. BUT, I do not want to live in fear of the repercussions if I do not go along with the regime. I believe free will is a right we all have and should exercise - to our own peaceful living. Free will is not forcing my belief on YOU! And if I choose to express my free will, I should not be battered by others. That is the definition of fascism in my opinion. Thank you Ron Howard

My hope and prayer is that America can overcome the life cycle of democracy that we appear to be on. The quote that refers to learning from the past so that you don't repeat it, rings true in what is going on today.

My thoughts EXACTLY. I would add to point number 5. Paying higher taxes. If we moved to a single payer healthcare system .. like the UK... ( I am a transplanted Brit.. now US Citizen)... Yes, for some our taxes would be higher ... but NOWHERE NEAR as high as the premiums, co-pays, deductibles... NOT TO MENTION. the peace of mind KNOWING you are covered regardless of your status, diagnosis or insurance company whim.

Wow! Isn't it great to read a well written commentary. We all know that Trump wouldn't get past the first sentence.
I think this is one of the best definitions of a liberal I have read and I agree because I am a liberal not a socialist, sorry Bernie.

RE #15
America and Americans have always prospered more under times of change, times of innovation, times of growth. During the industrial revolution new ways of making things brought out innovations and improvements. Same for the growth of the highway system under Eisenhower. Same for the space race.
We have a chance to improve our energy infrastructure with new and improved alternate energy sources. Solar power, wind power and others give us a chance to again be at the top. All are growth industries poised to introduce new jobs and new wealth for all. We should use this opportunity to truly make America great again.

Lori Gallagher Witt isn't very happy that her words have been incorrectly attributed to Ron Howard. This is just another example of the disinformation that the anonymity of the internet allows.

Many of the views in the article are held by conservatives. However, the fascist remarks are untrue and divisive.

Intellectual honesty is dead in liberal echo chambers. It's sad, I used to depend on liberal thinkers to add constructively and creatively to resolution of issues.

Now, unfortunately, I can depend on Machiavellian practices only from the majority of liberal articles that I read and watch.

Get your act together liberals!! We independent thinkers need a good, honest debate from all liberals, conservatives and Independents.

I guess I qualify as a Trumpist. Yes, I was able to read and comprehend the entire article. There are many things stated it, that I completely agree with, but also things that are really stupid. Trump is a lot of things, some good and some bad, but isn't that the way of all politicians? Trump is not a Fascist any moe than Bernie is a Communist. I can't agree with the minimum wage thing because, in a short time, inflation will place the poor in exactly the same place as they were before or worse because jobs disappear never to return (robotics). While the article does not encourage big government, it offers no other solution. My question for liberals and fiscal conservatives is why don't we get together and amend the Constitution to place permanent term limits on all elected government officials? By the way, that should include the Supreme Court which is now a political body that we don't even get to vote for.

In one section, he states that he is for a nationwide healthcare system. He knows that this will increase taxes, but that's alright because he believes it morally right. In a later section, he rails on the government's attempts to create legislation based on morals that he doesn't agree with. While I couldn't agree more with the latter statement, the former statement makes everything hypocritical. If you have a problem with the government making you do things you don't believe in, you can't say that laws you do believe in are the exception to the rule. He is, basically, saying it's alright as long as I believe in it, but it doesn't matter how anyone else feels.

Of course the Republicans might be worrying a little bit more also. I'm not necessarily a Bernie fan, but how can anyone be surprised? I don't burn flags, kill babies, steal guns or give handouts to drug addicts. It is responsible and moral to care for those in need and limit corporate and individual greed. We should expect foreign governments not to interfere with elections. We should take care of the only planet that we know of at this point that is fit for humans to live on.

There was a woman, last year, named Krissy Noble. She was pregnant at home when a burglar broke in. She shot him and killed him with her husband's gun. Self defense, the police said. Problem was, she had a marijuana conviction and she faced charges for using her husband's gun for defending herself. Any gun control legislation tells every woman with a conviction, red flag law, whatever, that they must risk prison to defend themselves and their families. Not acceptable, but that is what the Democrat party wants. It sounds melodramatic, but it is true.

As far as illegal immigration goes, a local banker told me this story: He had a client, a woman who wanted to buy a house. Her credit was run and it had been discovered that her identity had been stolen by an illegal who was actually buying his OWN house. The banker told her the only way this could be resolved was to sell the other guy's house out from under him because, legally, it was her house. The illegal tried to fight it in court, but lost and was deported. A harsh story, but what choice do you have?

Yes, this article is amazing but it WAS NOT written by Ron Howard!

“Ron Howard did not make the remarks to which you refer, on Facebook,” Imagine Entertainment, the film and television production company founded by Howard and his co-creator Brian Grazer in 1986, told AFP.

The article was actually written by author Lori Gallagher Witt and was posted to her Facebook page in January 2018. As this article spread on social media, Witt’s name was eventually stripped from the text. When the article appeared on the website Medium in August 2019, for instance, it was preceded by an introduction explaining that a “friend” had posted the article from an anonymous author on Facebook.

Please check your sources before sharing things on Facebook. Ms. Gallagher Witt deserves to be cited as she is the actual author.

I voted for Trump, and I agree with almost all of this! This is what most of Americans want and would whole heartedly support. I couldn’t agree more with taking care of those weaker. I don’t agree with working hard to support my family and my community and those less fortunate and then paying more so that our government can take over AND dictate how I should live and take my right of being a Christian away. Our country was founded on Christian principles and I am a Christian and should not have to live like I am ashamed of that. And I agree that I don’t have the right to force my values on you, but that doesn’t mean we should take my heritage of my country down for the sake of offending those who don’t believe this. I voted for Trump simply because he wasn’t a politician. I do not think that being a career politician is correct either. Thank you so much for this it truly does speak to what both sides of the aisle would like to see.

I'll take a stab at giving my thoughts about a few of the issues raised:
1) A country should take care of its weakest members. Agree, with a caveat.I subscribe to the philosophy, don't just provide a fish for a day, but teach a man to fish so he can eat for a lifetime.
2) Healthcare is a right. Disagree. A person's health is their responsibility. Should a society be on the hook for taking care of a person who abuses their body, smokes, drinks, over eats, never exercises? For people who are born with an illness beyond their control, I do think society has a responsibility to help them within limits (affordable cost to society).
3) Education should be affordable? Agree. Sad that Obama and many liberals thought everyone should be able to pay for college and removed the requirement by banks to qualify for their loan. This one act has allowed colleges to charge any amount for college, knowing the banks would make the loans that have put thousands in debt, and caused education costs to skyrocket.
4) Don't believe your money should be taken from you and given to people who don't work. Agree. But you must not have listened to Liz Warren and Bernie, because they do want to do this. Wealthy should pay their fair share. Agree. However, is 90% fair?
5) Companies should pay a living wage. Agee.
6) Don't want to live by my religious rules. Agree. However, preserving life of unborn children is not a religious rule. It should be protection of life by a civil society. Just like many laws that are enacted to protect society and the most venerable, as you stated earlier.
7) Illegal immigrants are ineligible for all the programs outlined by conservatives. Disagree, just not so. Illegal immigrants cost society billions of dollars a year in the form of free education, healthcare, legal representation, criminal prosecution, ect. Not to mention lower wages for US citizens. To try and say otherwise is just not true. I agree that employers should pay hefty fines to stop illegal hiring. These people are being exploited and it should stop.
The US is one of the most generous nations in the world. We admit over 1 million legal immigrants a year. We spend trillions of dollars helping low income families and the helpless. The question becomes, where do we draw a line. In California, over 25% of the 11 million residence are on Medicaid, and over 33% of the population receives tax payer government assistance of some kind. Liberals seem to think the taxpayer is an unlimited resource. Taking money from hard working people to pay for able bodied people to sit at home. I have seen this first hand. I know I'm talking about.
Let's stop the division and work together where we agree to solve these serious issues! Trump will work with you.
Please do the right thing. As a blogger, you should be sensitive to Intellectual Property. I doubt you would want people to steal your content and misattribute your hard work. As a woman, you should want to support other powerful women and give them the credit they deserve. I'm quite sure that even Ron Howard, as a creative person, would want the original author of this work to have the credit she deserves. Do the right thing, either take down this post because it's wrongly attributed, and by keeping it up and allowing it to be shared as it is, you are contributing to the dissemination of misinformation, OR, put up the proper link to Lori Gallagher Witt's page from January of 2018. Be a good person. Do the right thing.

As a true Independent I float around the middle, occasionally reaching out on either side of the issues. That is because I DO NOT need some political party doing my thinking for me. That said, I agree point by point in the statements made by the author of this piece with a few caveats here and there. I have a great fear that with the folks running on the Liberal side of things in this next election that our fascist in chief, yeah I know he is probably as fascist as Bernie is communist, just venting, will be around for another four years. That means the damage that has been done to our society may become non-repairable by the end of that time......

Sad to see that an eloquently written piece (NOT BY RON HOWARD) will cause people to immediately start bashing Trump. How stuck in your own head and beliefs does one have to be to take something written and immediately use it to bash people on the other side of the aisle. For all of you screaming about unity maybe you should think about how "unified" your own speech is. Calling someone ignorant and unable to write because they are Trump supporters is not very unified. If you rabidly support any politician you are part of the problem. For there to be a united world where people stop hating each other there has to be an openness to other ideas and opinions. The world is not right or left anymore, and I promise you, Trump, Warren, Cortez, Sanders...none of them go to sleep at night wondering if you have enough money to pay your rent. Stop blindly following people who could care less about your daily life no matter what side of the aisle they reside on.

FEDERAL REPUBLIC; This is what one liberal thinks. Every liberal running for president wants to enact gun control and bypass the 2nd Amendment. They also want to do away with immigration and make every city they can into a sanctuary city. They also want to take half of the military budget and put the funds into social programs. Listen to the liberal’s proposals: New Green Deal, Medicare for all, education for all for free, immigration that benefits them, not us. So where would all of this money come from? The liberals say from the rich but if all of these new programs will cost 50 trillion over 20 years, then how will taking all of their money work when it will require more money? That’s right, the middle class will have to pay more than ever before. Face it liberals, not all jobs require equal pay because if they did, I would much rather sweep floors than manage 17 people and work 10 hour days. Some people don’t wish to be educated so let them fall behind. It’s their choice. I am not a liberal, a communist or a republican; I am an American who has worked over 40 years of my life for what I have. I do not trust the Government to run anything and would prefer a much smaller Government. To put them in charge of healthcare would further sink this country into second class status.

I thought it was an interesting piece and had some good points. I too think that companies who hire people should pay appropriate wages.ad provide health care insurance. Obama care was not workable because forced people to buy something they didn't need( (men birth control) and many other things Plus premiums were way too high and deductibles were enormous. some of the people who benefited the mot were the ones who paid nothing. Sorry, that is just one point. I was insulted by the responses who for no reason denigrated President Trump and anyone who voted for him...There are people who may not have a Masters degree who have more empathy and common sense in their little finger than these elites have in their over inflated heads...I see bumper signs al the time denigrating Trump. But I am afraid to put a sign for him on my car for fear that it will get keyed or worse. Yes the Liberals have been that bad.....Of course not all Liberals. Just as all Conservatives are not illiterate. I happen to believe that most of us want a lot of the same things. We just disagree how to get there,...No matter what party or none the Politicians are robbing us blind while they and there families are getting rich.. That needs to stop...We have to vet those we are putting into office....You can't just listen to one TV station or believe everything you hear....You must educate yourself. I am aware I have not written in the proper form , you may find some misspelled words but I hope you find some thing that rings true for you...I am82 years old and have lived a lot of life.
