Kentucky Butter Cake

This is such a good pound cake.  It is dense and moist with a crunchy sugar shell.

Heavily butter and flour a bundt pan.

  • 1 cup butter, cubed at room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon  salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
Mix all of this together with the paddle attachment of your mixer and pour it into the pan.  Bake it at 325 degrees for about 75 minutes or until a toothpick stuck in the cake comes out clean.

Just before the cake is done baking, make the sauce:

Butter Glaze
  • ⅓ cup butter
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
Cook this over medium heat just until the sugar dissolves.  Do not let this boil.

Remove the cake from the oven.

Poke the cake all over with a knife.

Ladle the sauce all over the cake.

Let it soak in before adding more sauce.

Let the cake cool completely before removing it from the pan.

Flip the cake out onto a plate.

This cake actually is better after sitting for a day.
