Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

We went to a ramp festival in West Virginia yesterday and I'll post pics once I've sorted through all of them.  After we left the festival, we headed west to tour the Trans Atlantic Lunatic Asylum in Weston, WV.  This building is the second largest sandstone building in the world; the Kremlin being the largest.
I have a lot to post about this place but today I will start with the art gallery.

Click any pic to enlarge.  If you still can't read something because it's too small, hold down your command key and click on the + key to make it bigger.

All of the art work was left behind by patients.

This hospital closed in 1994 which is rather startling.

This is some pretty amazing stuff.  The pain these patients were in is quite obvious in some of these pieces.

So, take your time and peruse these if you are interested and tomorrow I will post more of the hospital and the practices within.

Trump is a Cunt

Fullnovembermoon sent this to me the other day and I am still laughing!  Off to a big ramp festival!  hope you enjoy this:

Food for Guests

For informal meals when you are having guests or a luncheon meeting or any gathering where people are going to be sitting around a table talking, I like to serve grazing food. Meat and cheese platters are perfect for this.  People can eat at their own pace and everything is basically bite sized.  This platter is made up of Double Gloucester cheddar, Dolce Gorgonzola(best blue cheese ever), Brie and Greek Kefalotyri.  There is smoked sausage, sopresatta, prosciutto and thinly sliced rosemary ham.  I made deviled eggs and meatballs and added them too. I always scatter assorted nuts and olives around the platter too.  I forgot to take a pic but I made hummus and a smoked salmon spread to set on the side of the platter. For condiments I made truffle mustard and whole grain mustard, pickles and a blackberry jalapeno compote which is excellent with the blue cheese.
I made an assortment of breads: garlic toasts, rosemary foccacia and french bread.

A side of pesto pasta is always good too. The 'rachette' pasta holds the pesto and is fun to use in this salad.

I haven't heard yet but I'm betting that The Blog Tech, his wife and guests picked at this for hours.
Or maybe they rushed through it to get to the Kentucky Butter Cake I made for dessert. Man this cake got stuck in the pan!  Does anyone have a full proof way to get a stuck cake out of a pan?  I did all the stuff I was supposed to do and it still stuck.  I even placed it in hot water.  Maybe it's the sticky sauce that gets poured over the cake that caused it.

I can't tell you how good this compote is.  I usually make it with raspberries but couldn't find any so I used blackberries instead.  You could make this with almost any berry.

2 C. blackberries
3/4 C. sugar
1 jalapeno pepper
juice of 1/2 lemon

Place everything in  a heavy pot and cook it over medium heat.

Keep an eye on it so it doesn't boil over.

Crush the berries against the side of the pot to break them up a bit.

Once it starts to thicken, it's ready.

Store it in a jar in the fridge.  It lasts a while. You can keep it mild by taking the seeds and veins out of the jalapeno or leave them in for some heat.

Hummingbirds and Taco Pasta

I love hummingbirds and see many of them in my gardens. I found some hummingbird pendants and thought they would make great mirror chains.  I made one I really liked and hung it in my back garden and when my daughter was here, she fell in love with it so it went home with her. Click for a closer look.

The Blog Tech and his wife have house guests coming in tonight so I made them this one to give to their guests.

Some people are afraid to hang these outside when I give them one but I've left mine out over the winter and they still look like new.
Since the end of the after school program is near, I've started asking the kids for requests.  Almost without exception, they want something loaded with cheese.  They really, really like cheese.

Now that we are into hot weather, Teddy wants to get up and go outside when it's cooler.  So, I was making taco mac and cheese at 3:00am this morning.  I have lots of cooking to do today for the house guests  and I'll show you tomorrow what I made.

Nasty People

Do you notice how easy it is to spot Trump supporters? Check out yesterday's comments.
I thought I would give you a laugh by posting these tweets from his Scotland trip in case you missed them.
What a hoot!  These tweets just gave me a whole new vocabulary.

Short post today because this 'liberal high living kid' has to deliver the food she made for 50 kids who Trump and his administration don't think deserve to be educated or fed.

Spring

At the end of each winter, I stand in my growing area planting tiny little seeds in small trays thinking this will never be enough plants for my garden.  Then spring arrives and I shake my head thinking of what I will do with 30 poblano pepper plants.

I have all of my friends lined up to receive some but there is a possibility that I will be standing in traffic, flagging people down to take some off my hands.

The Blog Tech and his wife's wedding tree wintered over very well and soon will be planted in their yard.

Bay tree growth makes me happy.  I winter these over in my garden room.

Apple hope.
This is my glorious Silver Maple killed by my neighbor when he dug the roots to lay a 2X2 concrete slab to sit his Home Depot fountain on it.  It has to be taken out and replaced with something.  The problem is, we designed the entire garden around it and it's hard to get equipment in to take it down.  The neighbor is about as willing to accept responsibility for this mistakes as The Trump is for any of his mistakes which are constant.  Do you ever notice how some people are totally incapable of ever admitting to doing anything wrong?

A witch flying over the two tulips that the squirrels haven't eaten.

We finally had a bit of rain and everything turned instantly green.

 The Magnolias are opening.

Isn't Spring marvelous?  This was a little over a week ago.
And here it is this morning.
