The First Snow

A couple days ago, I opened my front door to see this......Ahhhhhh...snow!

Within a couple hours it looked like this....more snow!!!

The back yard just after the snow began.

Teddy observes the gardens from the back porch.  She is not a snow lover like my last chow.

She prefers to be inside when there is lots of snow.

Teddy is acutely aware of any changes in her surroundings.  I brought out a purse which I haven't used in ages to give to my daughter.  I laid it on the coffee table and as soon as she came in the room she noticed it.

She decided to take a closer look.  She has never set foot on this table before.

Hmmmm....maybe I will play with the angel?

But I really want that purse.

What a predicament.

I can see through this table.

This is how she chooses to interact with the snow.  It is a killer on the heat bills.

Not too long after the snow started it looked like this.

More snow is on the way with very cold temperatures so it will be hanging around here for a while.  Happy New Year's Eve!

I Am Back

I am finally back up and running!  Here are some photos from my Christmas Morning.  Teddy is looking for her presents.

My kids still love to dive into their toys!

Teddy keeps searching.

She found and killed Santa quickly.

Then she got into her bones.

What do you mean, mama?  I don't have dirt all over my face.  I did not just hide that new bone.  Click to see the dirty face.

Then it was on to bone number 2!

We are waiting for more snow to arrive here.  I am loving and cherishing every single flake!

Broken Computer 4

At least we are getting more snow!!!   A lot of people have enquired about how I destroyed my computer and how the screen replacement cost 660.00.  It hurts to even type that.  I use an Apple laptop with a 17 inch screen.  I have had it for about 4 years and it has been a great computer.  I use it in the kitchen for most of the day and the screen is a dust and grease magnet.  I have always used a slightly damp paper towel with a drop of dawn dish detergent to wipe down the screen. Then I dry it with another dry paper towel.  I have done this several times a week for 4 years.  Four days ago when I did this, I guess the paper towel was a bit too damp.  Water leaked into the bottom of my screen and fried it.   The 17 inch is no longer made though the Apple store happened to have one screen replacement left in that size.  The cheapest new Apple laptop would cost over 2000.00.  Both kids just got new laptops for Christmas so the last thing I wanted to do was buy a third.  So, I bit the bullet and went for the screen replacement.  I am chalking this up to a very expensive lesson learned and water of any kind will never get close to my computer again.  We already have about 8 inches of snow this morning with another 6 inches on the way.  It is distracting me from my computer crisis!  Fingers crossed that I get my computer back today!  Meanwhile I am baking simit and making a big Turkish brunch.

Broken Computer 3

Hi all!  My computer is still at the shop.  I am hoping it will be fixed today.  Be sure you take care when cleaning your screen and don't make this mistake!  It is costly....660.00 for a new screen!  UGH! At least we are supposed to get more snow tomorrow and that makes me very happy!  I hope to be back soon.

Broken Computer 2

Hi all!  I am typing on my daughter's computer right now.  I cleaned my computer screen with a damp paper towel and I fried the screen.  It is being replaced (very expensive!) and I will have it in a day or two (I hope)!  Meanwhile I will just be rolling in the wonderful snow (8+ inches) that we got overnight. I'll keep you posted on when I will be back to my regular posting.  Fingers crossed that the computer gods will smile on me!

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas to everyone!  It is mild here today but a big storm is on the way.  We are supposed to get 6 inches so all is right with the world.

Yesterday afternoon I made 25 sandwiches.

I made even more kringles.  Some small.....

and some large.

I got out a bunch of paper bags.

Put Christmas stickers on them.

Then I made a huge pot of creamy chicken and rice soup and packed up 25 thermal containers of it.

I wrapped spoons up in holiday napkins and packed it all up in the bags along with some good Christmas candy.

And I took it all into the city and passed the bags out to the homeless under the bridges.

It made my Christmas very merry.

Christmas Cookie Platters

I finally finished the cookie plates and will deliver them later this afternoon.

It took me four hours to assemble and wrap them.

I made a dozen of them and each one holds 6 dozen cookies.

My husband drives my kids around the neighborhood and they deliver them.

It was a marathon of baking.

But very satisfying when they are all done.

There are about to be some happy cookie munchers in my neighborhood tonight!

And just because I have a problem ever being done with something, I decided to make some Christmas kringles to pass out too.

You can find the recipe here:  http://octoberfarm.blogspot.com/2011/12/christmas-kringles.html

I made 36 small ones and became so bored that I made 4 big ones.

I might not bake anything for a few days!  Happy Christmas Eve!

A Little Christmas Hockey Eye Candy and Crock Pot Candied Pecans

For all of you hockey lovers that are as disappointed in this season as I am, I will share something that I received from the Czech Republic.  This card came in yesterday's mail.

Damn if Jaromir is not aging well. Click to enlarge.

I am good friends with Jagr and his family though I rarely see them anymore since he left the NHL.

I really miss them.

Teddy is not sure what to do in the snow.

She seems to forget she is a chow chow and supposed to adore snow.

I keep seeing this recipe on pinterest and finally made it yesterday.

If you like those candied almonds that are sold in cones, try this recipe:  http://detrimentalbeauty.com//?s=almonds&search=Go

SNOW!!!

Finally we got a bit of snow!  Not nearly what was forecast but I  will take what I can get.

I also made bread this morning to give to a friend that does not eat sweets but loves bread.  I made the rosemary no knead bread again and some French bread.  If you have not tried this French bread recipe, here it is again:  http://octoberfarm.blogspot.com/2012/11/terrific-french-bread-and-finished.html

You just take it out of the fridge and pull off some dough, let it proof and then bake it whenever you want some fresh bread.

I flatten a piece and then roll it and stretch it.

I let it proof in bread pans and bake it in them for about the first 15 minutes.  Then I slide them out of the pans and let them finish baking on my oven stone.

Teddy footprints.

Teddy was surprised to see snow this morning.

She was very sleepy and slow moving at 4:30 am.

It took a bit of coaxing to get her to go out.

She just had a bit of breakfast and still had some on her lips.

The rosemary bread fresh from the oven.

My friend was thrilled to get this.  She hides it from her family to save it for herself.

Please Santa send more snow!
